The Stonehenge and Old Sarum
The final stop(s) of my England trip was the mythical Stonehenge. I took the bus tour from Salisbury, that took me to the Stonehenge visitor centre, and then the local shuttle bus to the stones.
The ravens and blackbirds perching on the Stones looked kind of ominous under the cloudy sky and reminded me of Erebor ravens.
Due to shortness of time, I did not have a chance to explore all the historical sites in the fields around, so I at least went to the Cursus barrows. Being barrows, they reminded me of the Barrow-downs of Tolkien’s creation, except there are no cursed stones on their tops.
At the visitor centre, you can see one of the stones close up, as well as a model ancient village.
The tour included a visit to Old Sarum, an ancient fort where William the Conqueror took residence. It consists of two ditch circles. Within the inner circle the fort used to stand. And on the plain between the circles used to stand the first Salisbury cathedral, the traces of which are still visible on the ground. The new cathedral in Salisbury’s town centre is visible from the top of the inner circle.
